What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that add volume and soften your facial contouring. They are a versatile tool that can help ease the signs of aging, plump your lips and cheeks, and fill in depressed scars.
As you age, you lose a significant amount of your facial volume. Without that same structural support, your skin is left to pool and sag into folds, lines, and wrinkles. Dermal fillers restore that lost volume and help you look younger and more well-rested.
Several dermal fillers offered at Radiance Dermatology are formulated from a synthetic type of hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in your skin. Because your body recognizes the injected substance, the risk of a negative reaction is low. The Restylane® and Juvederm® lines of products use hyaluronic acid as the primary ingredient.
Radiance Dermatology also offers Sculptra® Aesthetic, which works a little differently. Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a synthetic substance that encourages your body to produce more collagen. The dermal filler fills in deep creases and folds to give you a naturally more youthful appearance.
What issues can dermal fillers improve?
Some of the areas where dermal fillers can bring improvement include:
Cheek or midface region
Nasolabial folds running from the nose to the corners of the mouth
Marionette lines running from the corners of the mouth to the chin
Hollows beneath the eyes
Vertical lip lines and lips
Dermal fillers like Restylane can also smooth the backs of your hands or increase the volume and definition of your lips.
There are numerous choices on the market in a wide array of formulations intended to treat different parts of the face.
How long do the results of dermal fillers last?
Because dermal fillers come in so many formulations, there is no hard and fast rule. Some fillers last around 12 months, while others can last as long as two years. One of the benefits of hyaluronic acid-based fillers is that your body can absorb and process the filler material naturally over time.
As your effects begin to fade, you can decide if you’d like to come in for a new round of treatments or explore other aesthetic treatments. Touch-up appointments are available if you’d like to add a bit more fullness here or there.
