Having an allergic reaction to hair dye is a common occurrence. It appears as contact dermatitis, with a red, flaky, itchy rash in the areas that the skin came into contact with the dye. Rashes can be treated with topical or oral steroid ointments; to prevent further flare ups, discontinue use of the hair dye that caused the rash and avoid other hair dyes or products that may contain the same ingredients.
